Screen Print - Mark Making

Tutorial by: Mr. Dave Fortune (UWE print centre screen print department)
website: www.fortuneandassociates.co.uk

This is a very interesting screen print method as we can draw directly on the mark making film, a film with grain that enable it to go under exposure directly, and skip the "draw-scan-edit-print" session.

We can used:
  • graphite
  • technical pen ink (indian ink is not usable as it is not as sticky as this)
  • pencil
  • marker
  • make texture after applying ink

This is what I done, make texture with the ink, then blend it with white spirit.

This should be work on a low luminated light box, as it is very hard to see the detail on a desk.

To put the emulsion on, lean your silk screen very firmly against the wall, as you can see there's a wood on the top of the screen holding it.

For the emulsion to dry, put it into a light-proof container, 45°c degree.

after the emulsion is dried, put it into exposure.

the glass can be fold straight up, and the exposure time with this Ultraviolet light is.... 65 seconds!!!

This is what it happen when the door is closed
Then, wash the screen.

We are using acrylic as our printing medium, so will have to add this.
Process to print. A screen printing workplace with vacuum

The film looks plain on a desk

But is very detailed when place under exposure.

Close up details:

Even the edge of the film can be printed out with the 120 screen, this shows how detail can the screen be. And we even have 150 screen!!

Emulsion: 1 layer 1 side, (No: 120 Screen)

Exposure: Ultraviolet Light 65 seconds

Color: (50% Acrylic + 50% Acrylic Printing Medium) + Screen Retarder.

Guess what? From exposure to print, to clean the screen, it only took 1 hour @.@
